"Baskets". Pieced and applique antique quilt. Circa 1880. Over 200 skillfully sewn tiny baskets were assembled on this spread to form a dazzling graphic in a wide variety of period calicos. The maker was advanced in both piecework and applique techniques. Each basket is pieced with 11 calico triangles alternating with muslin, and appliqued with a "handle" on each. A border of "handles" is used for a playful frame around all four sides. Rarely if ever used, this was among someone's most prized quilts, brought out only for special occasions, and has remained in excellent condition.
