Extraordinarily well preserved, this elegant antique textile was created by an anonymous maker highly skilled in both traditional quilting techniques: applique and piecework. "Turkey" red and green motifs on a white ground formed a traditional favorite combination of mid-19th-Century quilters. The background spaces here are all generously filled with excellent quilt stitchery in floral and straight-line patterns. The repetition of one single flower in a geometric maze creates a stately, quietly forceful effect, softened by a winding ribbon border with appliqued blossoms. 1850-1875.
