Antique pieced quilt. "Mosaic Hexagons," circa 1840. Mid-19th century quilters were sometimes fortunate enough to have access to the richly colored, highly detailed calicoes of the period which were meant for fancy clothing or decorating. Here the hexagons were skillfully pieced and finished with fine overall quilting to form an extremely elegant spread.

This design evolved over the years to become one of the most popular patterns of the early 20th century. Re-interpreted in the cotton candy colors and prints of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, it became a favorite, the "Grandmother's Flower Garden." Embroidered in the corner on the back is "S.C.", possibly the maker's initials, or those of the person for whom the quilt was intended.
